Tinashe Maruta, a 21-year-old Harare resident, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for committing multiple heinous crimes, including raping two women and robbery. Maruta received 20 years for each rape count and 10 years for each robbery count, with two of the robbery sentences running concurrently.

Maruta and his accomplice, Frank Mafati, targeted unsuspecting victims in Whitecliff, Zvimba area, using a machete and an unidentified pistol. They robbed and raped multiple victims, including a couple, and stole valuables worth US$95.

During the trial, Maruta claimed to have a medical condition that made it impossible for him to have sex with women without causing their deaths. However, medical examination reports disproved this claim. Regional Magistrate Estere Chivasa stated that the State proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, with overwhelming evidence of Maruta’s guilt.

The crimes occurred on January 24 and February 7, 2023. On the first incident, Maruta and Mafati followed a woman home from a bus stop, robbed her, and took turns raping her in a nearby maize field. In the second incident, they terrorized a couple, assaulted them, and raped the wife in her husband’s presence.

The victims reported the crimes to the police and underwent medical examinations. Investigations led to the arrest of Maruta and Mafati, and the recovery of stolen cellphones.

Maruta’s conviction and sentencing serve as a reminder that justice will be served for heinous crimes committed. As he serves his sentence, consideration will be given to providing appropriate care and support, addressing any medical conditions and ensuring rehabilitation.
