By Tafadzwa Nyamuzihwa Hannover, Germany-The Seke Road, which connects Chitungwiza to Harare’s CBD, has increasingly become known for tragic road accidents, with a disturbing rise in fatalities every week. Just last week, a horrific accident claimed the lives of 17 people—one of the deadliest the road has seen in recent months. Unfortunately, such incidents are no longer rare. The frequency of accidents has turned this vital highway into one of the most dangerous roads in the country. Commuters and road users who spoke to this publication expressed growing concern over the situation. Rosemary, a daily user of the route, said: “It’s high time there are more police roadblocks along this road.” Another commuter, Farai Takendesa, added: “Public transport flies on the road—something has to be done.” There is a growing call for stricter measures. Suggestions include limiting public transport drivers to those above the age of 35, increasing the number of speed humps, and installing speed trap cameras along the highway. Seke Road, a lifeline for thousands commuting between Chitungwiza and Harare, is now considered even more dangerous than the busy Masvingo Highway. Stakeholders are being urged to urgently come together to find lasting solutions before more lives are lost.
