This initiative comes in the wake of a State of Disaster declaration by President Emmerson Mnangagwa due to the escalating waste management challenges.The partnership was announced by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Daniel Garwe, who highlighted its significance in addressing the pressing waste issues that have affected residents’ quality of life. Over the years, Harare has struggled with inadequate waste disposal systems, leading to overflowing rubbish and public health hazards. Addressing the Waste CrisisHis Worship, Mayor Jacob Mafume, emphasized the urgency of the situation during a recent press briefing. “Waste management was declared a national disaster,” he stated. “We are now entering what could be referred to as CHENESA 3, aimed specifically at managing solid waste at the household level. Our collaboration with Geo Pomona is crucial both for effective waste collection and the management of the Pomona dump site.”Despite past criticisms regarding the previous arrangements—where waste collection was not meeting demand—Mayor Mafume expressed optimism about the new structure of the partnership. “We have addressed the pain points from earlier agreements. Enhancing Urban LivabilityThe company plans to focus efforts on high-traffic areas such as the Central Business District, Mbare, and key shopping centers, ensuring these locations are consistently clean and free of waste. “A cleaner city will not just improve the view; it will enhance public health and protect the environment,” the representative added. Geo Pomona is also committed to engaging the community in its initiatives. The company plans to launch extensive public awareness campaigns to inform residents about waste collection schedules and best practices for waste disposal. Through social media and community outreach, they aim to foster community involvement in keeping Harare clean. “We want everyone to be aware of our plans and how we can all contribute to making this project a success,” the representative emphasized.
