By Dr MASIMBA MAVAZA KWEKWE, Zimbabwe — An ambulance technician and two accomplices were convicted of theft after stealing $1,260 in cash and $10 in airtime from a road accident victim they were supposed to help, prosecutors said. The Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court found Edius Mugonegwa, 40, an ambulance technician with Redcliff Municipality, guilty alongside Pride Makamba, 25, and Anashe Mukwamba, 23.Prosecutors said Mugonegwa responded to a Sept 7 accident along the Kwekwe-Redcliff Road. While giving first aid, bloodstained cash fell from the victim’s pocket. Instead of safeguarding the money, Mugonegwa conspired with Makamba and Mukwamba to take it. The victim later realized his cash was missing after regaining consciousness at Kwekwe General Hospital and reported the theft to the police. Detectives from CID Kwekwe arrested the three and recovered part of the stolen money. Mugonegwa was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with three months suspended for five years. The remaining 15 months were commuted to 825 hours of community service. Makamba and Mukwamba each received 12 months in prison, with three months suspended for five years, and nine months replaced by 315 hours of community service.
