Zimbabwe’s government has taken a significant step towards supporting vulnerable children by pledging to settle its ZiG57 million debt to the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM). This move follows a directive from the ruling Zanu PF party to clear the arrears, announced at the party’s 21st Annual People’s Conference in Bulawayo. President Mnangagwa emphasized that party gatherings are not just “talk shows” but platforms for championing the country’s development and progress, reaffirming Zanu PF’s supremacy over the government.

The Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) plays a vital role in Zimbabwe’s education sector, providing assistance to orphans and vulnerable children. Launched in 2000 as part of the Enhanced Social Protection Project (ESPP), BEAM aims to alleviate social conditions in Zimbabwe. It’s the largest educational assistance program in the country, supporting thousands of vulnerable children.

However, BEAM has faced challenges, including delayed payments to schools and a growing debt to the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC). Over 532,000 students risk missing their final examinations due to the government’s outstanding debt to ZIMSEC.

To address these challenges, Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube has prioritized the payment of the ZiG57 million arrears. Treasury has committed to clearing the outstanding arrears to ensure schools receive timely funding. Additionally, the government aims to enhance the program’s effectiveness to ensure learners receive maximum benefits. The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare will also ensure prompt payments once Treasury releases the funds.

By settling its debt to BEAM, the Zimbabwean government demonstrates its commitment to supporting vulnerable children and ensuring their access to education. With these initiatives in place, BEAM can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of thousands of children across Zimbabwe.
