Ashton Guramatunhu, a 46-year-old Zimbabwean man, has been jailed for 40 months for posing as a registered nurse and committing a £173,000 identity-theft fraud in the UK.

Guramatunhu used the stolen identity of a genuine healthcare worker to secure shifts at six nursing homes across northeast England between 2015 and 2019.

His deception was uncovered when the real nurse was contacted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) about an incident at a care home he had never worked at.

An investigation led by Detective Constable Naomi Sargent revealed Guramatunhu’s previous convictions made him unsuitable to work in the care sector, and he had put patients’ lives at risk for financial gain.

The case highlights concerns about gaps in health-sector vetting systems, particularly in an environment where shortages create pressure to hire quickly.

Police hope the sentence sends a clear message to fraudsters and recruitment agencies to tighten verification processes.
