In a resounding victory, Cde Cephas Ncube of Bulawayo Province has been elected as the new chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA). The highly contested election took place at the ZANU PF Convention Centre in Gweru during the association’s elective congress.

Ncube’s impressive win saw him secure 294 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Cde Albert Ncube, who garnered 90 votes. Other notable contenders, Cde Victor Matemadanda and outgoing chairperson Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa, received 75 and 11 votes, respectively.

The election marked a significant milestone for the ZNLWVA, as the association seeks to revitalize its leadership and advance its mission. Cde Shorai Nyamangondo was unanimously elected as vice chairperson, bringing a wealth of experience to the role.

The new executive committee boasts an impressive lineup of seasoned veterans, including Cde Joel Murerengwa as Secretary-General and Cde Thomas Manyima as head of Legal Affairs. Other key positions were filled by Cde Vincent Chinone (Transport), Cde Section Ncube (Finance), Cde Sanik Nguni (Security), Cde Nyembesi Togara (Women Affairs), and Cde Samuel Parirenyatwa (Political Commissar).

In his acceptance speech, Ncube expressed heartfelt gratitude to his comrades and pledged to work tirelessly to advance the association’s mission. “I’m deeply honored by the trust placed in me,” he emphasized. “I vow to work diligently with all members to move our association forward, ensuring our organization remains vibrant and relevant.”

Cde Matemadanda graciously conceded defeat, reaffirming his commitment to the association’s welfare and broader interests. “I extend my sincere thanks to all comrades for their support,” he said. “We’ll continue working together, advocating for our rights and the values we fought for.”

The ZNLWVA’s last elective congress was held in 2013, where Cde Mutsvangwa and his team were installed. According to the association’s constitution, congresses are scheduled every five years. However, the 2018 congress was postponed to prioritize harmonized elections, and further delays occurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As the ZNLWVA embarks on a new chapter, its members look forward to renewed vitality and effective leadership under Cde Ncube’s stewardship. The association remains a vital force in Zimbabwe, advocating for the welfare and interests of liberation war veterans.
