A Chinese man operating a mine in Zhombe was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of a Zimbabwean miner. Cai Yulong, the owner of Stone Steel Blue Mine, was also found guilty of attempted murder and assault.

The incident occurred on May 26, 2024, when Yulong confronted the miners over mining boundaries dispute which escalated into violence, resulting in the shooting and death of one miner. Another miner was seriously injured, while a third was assaulted.

Yulong was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and assault. After standing trial in the ongoing Midlands pr
ovince Gokwe High Court sitting, he was found guilty on all counts.

In addition to the 30-year prison sentence for murder, Yulong was also sentenced to five years in prison for attempted murder. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also fined USD100 for assault, or one month in prison if the fine is not paid.

The case has sparked concerns about the safety of Zimbabwean workers in the mining industry, particularly those employed by foreign-owned companies.
