The importance of agroecological tailoring was recently highlighted by Professor Dr. Obert Jiri, Zimbabwe’s Permanent Secretary, at the 2024 Annual Sustainability Summit. He stressed the need for climate-smart seeds tailored to specific regions to combat policy-induced droughts. The government has implemented policies requiring seed companies to supply suitable seeds for different regions, ensuring rural farmers receive the right tools.

The government’s clear policy on traditional grains mandates seed companies to refrain from supplying inappropriate seeds to various regions. As Professor Jiri explained, “We told seed companies that if they are going to sell maize seed in regions 4 and 5, it has to be climate-smart. Otherwise, they should sell traditional grains.” This tailored approach benefits rural farmers, enabling them to optimize crop production.

Agroecological tailoring promotes conservation agriculture practices like intercropping and agroforestry, enhancing soil health and biodiversity.
