The recent close of the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) characterized by its in-depth examination of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action has created a context to the commission’s strategic priorities for the period between the 70th and 73rd sessions. The topics selected for the 70th to 73rd sessions outline an integrated and cutting-edge approach to speeding up progress in gender equality.

These 2026-2029 themes are a step-by-step and organized framework aimed at responding to key, systemic challenges to women’s empowerment. Closer inspection yields the following strategic goals:

* 70th Session (2026):
Gives precedence to improved access to justice. Next year CSW be “Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, including by promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices, and addressing structural barriers.” This reflects an intention towards the eradication of underlying disparities in legal systems. Such an agenda involves systematic eradication of discriminatory laws, policies, and practices, and the building of inclusive and equitable legal frameworks.

* 71st Session (2027):
In 2027 CSW will be spurring efforts to deliver the 2030 Agenda. Reflecting on the indissociable nature of gender equality and the result of sustainable development, they will be “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” This strategic goal requires a comprehensive strategy, weaving gender considerations throughout all Sustainable Development Goals.

* 72nd Session (2028):
Aimed at strengthening care and support systems, focus will be placed on “Recognizing and strengthening care and support systems to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.” This theme recognizes the critical importance of care work within economic and social systems. Such a focus requires the establishment of policies and structures that identify, appreciate, and fairly share care responsibilities.

* 73rd Session (2029):
CSW will focus on gender dynamics in humanitarian emergencies placing emphasis on “Women and girls in humanitarian emergencies: advancing women’s participation and leadership, and achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in this context.” gives precedence to meeting the unique needs and vulnerabilities of women and girls during emergencies. Such a strategic priority puts particular emphasis on the contribution and leadership of women during humanitarian response and recovery.

These priorities, collectively, constitute a cohesive and strategic agenda. They represent an expression of an awareness that gender equality has to be built on a broad and sustained undertaking. Successful implementation will require close cooperation among governments, international organizations, civil society, and enterprise. Successful translation of these priorities into achievements will be a major driver of world advancement toward gender equality.
