The Deaf Zimbabwe Trust joined the global community to commemorate the International Day of Sign Languages. This year’s theme, “Sign Up for Sign Language Rights,” highlights the crucial role sign languages play in promoting human rights for the deaf community.

Barbra Nyangairi, Executive Director of Deaf Zimbabwe Trust, emphasized the significance of the day. She stated that, September 23 is a momentous occasion for the Deaf community, their families, and Zimbabwe as a whole. It is the day we celebrate unifying power of sign language, advocating for equal rights and opportunities.

Established by the World Federation of the Deaf in 2018, International Day of Sign Languages promotes awareness and recognition of sign languages as essential to Deaf people’s human rights. The day honors the Deaf community’s contributions and achievements.

In Zimbabwe, Deaf Zimbabwe Trust has been tirelessly promoting sign language rights through advocacy, education, and community engagement. Collaborations with government agencies, schools, and civil society organizations ensure equal access to information and services for Deaf individuals.

In order to build a more inclusive society, the Trust recommends that governments acknowledge sign languages in education, healthcare, and public services. Communities are have also been urged to get familiar with sign language and promote social unity. It is important for families to provide support to Deaf family members, guaranteeing them equal access to communication and opportunities.

By advocating for sign language rights, we can build a more equitable society. Deaf Zimbabwe Trust remains committed to promoting inclusivity and understanding.
