A revolutionary initiative to boost democratic participation across Sub-Saharan Africa was announced yesterday with the launching of the Digital Democracy Hackathon. The virtual event is set for May 9th and 10th, 2025, and calls innovators, developers, activists, and community leaders to develop tech-driven solutions that respond to the critical challenges to civic engagement and digital rights.

The hackathon is being organized by Magamba Network, a prominent African creative and digital media organization, in partnership with CIVICUS and is centered around three pillars: Digital Governance & Accountability, Digital Security & Activism, and Fighting Disinformation. Participants aged 18-35 will be invited to build new digital tools that allow citizens to monitor public services, demand accountability from elected officials, protect the growing number of activists in digital spaces, and respond to the most serious challenge to democracy that is the current climate of disinformation and low digital literacy.

Most importantly, the hackathon is focused on culturally relevant solutions that are scalable, and adaptable, and meaningfully tackle the unique barriers faced by underrepresented communities, and especially women, young people and marginalized groups who often experience limited access to resources during their fight for democratic rights. To ensure that women’s voices are represented, the hackathon requires each participating team to include a minimum of one female team member.

Successful projects will have the opportunity to receive $7,500 (USD) in seed funding to continue to develop their solutions. Every participant during the event will have access to mentors, datasets and a variety of resources. In addition, participants will be encouraged to apply open-source practices so that their projects have the widest reach and impact possible. Teams will be provided with a framework for evaluating core digital privacy requirements, accessibility, and decision-making practices for collaborative tools.

“This hackathon is a vital mission to transform the digital landscape of democracy across Sub-Saharan Africa,” stated a press release issued by the Magamba Network. “Together, we can create a meaningful impact that strengthens democratic values and ensures that every voice is heard.”

Applications for the Digital Democracy Hackathon are open until April 30th, 2025. Interested individuals and teams can apply online at https://hackathon.magambanetwork.com.
