Minister Mutsvangwa Charts Course for Revitalized Crafts Promotion

Harare – In a landmark meeting held today, September 11, 2024, the newly appointed Board Members of the National Handicraft Centre (NHC) gathered for their inaugural session. The Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Hon. Monica Mutsvangwa (Sen.), presided over the event, marking a significant step towards the Centre’s revitalization.

A rich heritage with a renewed vision, the NHC, established in 1989, has long been a cornerstone of Zimbabwean cultural preservation and economic empowerment. Dedicated to promoting the exceptional craftsmanship of the nation’s artisans, the Centre serves as a vital platform for showcasing the country’s unique identity through its renowned handicrafts, including the famed Binga basket.

Minister Mutsvangwa acknowledged the historic role of the NHC and emphasized the importance of its ongoing mission. She highlighted the Board’s crucial role in steering the Centre towards a future aligned with the national vision of an empowered and prosperous Zimbabwe by 2030.

Championing growth, sustainability, and innovation, the Senator implored the Board to embrace a multifaceted approach. While promoting and preserving Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage remains paramount, fostering innovation and sustainable practices are equally critical. She urged the Board to “honor our deep cultural heritage, while embracing innovative pathways to elevate our handicrafts.” Emphasizing the need to uplift the socio-economic well-being of artisans while ensuring eco-friendly practices that align with global standards.

Minister Mutsvangwa emphasized the importance of preserving Zimbabwe’s unique cultural identity while embracing innovative pathways to elevate handicrafts. This dual focus on tradition and innovation is expected to yield exciting results, as the Centre explores new ways to showcase Zimbabwe’s rich cultural diversity.

Looking ahead to the 2024-2025 planning period, Minister Mutsvangwa stressed the importance of aligning the NHC’s Strategic Plan with the national development strategy. Collaborative efforts will be crucial in crafting the 2025 Annual Plan and ensuring its successful implementation. This will involve engaging with stakeholders, identifying key areas for growth, and developing strategies to drive the Centre forward.

The Minister underscored the Board’s responsibility to uphold the highest standards of corporate governance. Abiding by the principles of transparency, accountability, and integrity is paramount. The Board is expected to operate within the confines of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act and demonstrate ethical conduct in all endeavors.

Building on experience and charting a new course, the Minister acknowledged the invaluable institutional memory that Mr. Kwaramba, the Centre’s longest-serving member, brings to the table. She also highlighted the support available from the Ministry’s Legal Department and the upcoming mandatory induction facilitated by the Corporate Governance Unit.

Hon. Minister (Sen.) Mutsvangwa concluded the meeting by expressing her unwavering support for the Board and the NHC’s transformative journey. She challenged the Board members to breathe new life into the Centre’s initiatives, while preserving traditional techniques and charting bold new pathways for the future; “energize the National Handicraft Centre, breathing life into old techniques while charting ambitious new avenues.” This collaborative effort, she emphasized, has the potential to empower Zimbabwe’s grassroots communities and propel the nation’s rich cultural heritage onto the global stage.

As the National Handicraft Centre embarks on this new chapter, Zimbabweans can expect a renewed focus on showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage to the world. With dedication and a deep sense of purpose, the Board is poised to take the Centre to new heights, putting Zimbabwean handicrafts on the global map.
