By Mlilo JoyinaniThe disappearance of basic commodities from shops in Zimbabwe is a disturbing issue with multiple causes and consequences. To understand the root of the problem, it’s essential to examine the country’s economic and political landscape. One of the primary causes of the shortage is the country’s severe economic crisis, which has been exacerbated by a combination of factors. Zimbabwe has been experiencing hyperinflation, with the inflation rate reaching as high as 500% in 2024. This has led to a significant decrease in the value of the local currency, making it difficult for businesses to import goods. The country is facing a severe shortage of foreign currency, which is necessary for importing goods. This has led to a decline in the availability of basic commodities, such as food, fuel, and medicine. Zimbabwe has been experiencing a severe drought, which has led to a decline in agricultural production. This has resulted in a shortage of food and other essential commodities. The country’s political instability, including the mention of the president’s term extension to 2030, has created uncertainty and undermined investor confidence. This has led to a decline in economic activity and a shortage of basic commodities. The ultimate outcome of the shortage of basic commodities is a humanitarian crisis, with many Zimbabweans struggling to access essential goods and services. The situation is particularly dire for vulnerable populations, such as the poor, the elderly, and those living in rural areas. To address the shortage of basic commodities, the government needs to take a multi-faceted approach otherwise we will always mourn year in, year out. We need economic reforms to stabilize the currency, increase foreign currency reserves, and promote economic growth.Let us invest in agriculture to increase food production and reduce reliance on imports, improve governance and reduce corruption to increase transparency and accountability. This problem can be solved by promoting political stability and reducing uncertainty to increase investor confidence and promote economic growth. Demanding good governance and accountability from our leaders is very vital. We need to promote national unity and reduce divisions along political, ethnic, and regional lines. Our government must support local businesses and promote economic growth not to relax up to the extent of importing toothpicks. The line ministries must invest in education and skills development to increase productivity and competitiveness. We have to encourage foreign investment and promote a favorable business environment. To achieve peace and prosperity, Zimbabweans need to work together to address the country’s economic and political challenges. This requires a collective effort from all stakeholders, including the government, civil society, and the private sector. In the short term, the government must address the shortage of basic commodities by importing essential goods, such as food and medicine, to meet the immediate needs of the population. That is very possible because it cannot be outdone by individuals who can import cars for giving bumshackers and individuals, because it owns everything in the country including minerals. We have to promote local production of basic commodities, such as food and textiles, to reduce reliance on imports. In the long term, the government needs to implement structural reforms to address the underlying causes of the shortage of basic commodities. Implementing economic reforms to stabilize the currency, increase foreign currency reserves, and promote economic growth must always be our top priority not to always talk about who will come in 2028 because it doesn’t help us in any way or angle of the economy. Investing in infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and irrigation systems, to increase productivity and reduce transportation costs can also help us. We have to promote private sector development and entrepreneurship to increase economic growth and job creation.By working together and taking a collective approach, Zimbabweans can overcome the current challenges and build a prosperous and peaceful future for their country.
