Vice President Kembo Mohadi recently emphasized the need to upscale trade during a meeting with Indian Ambassador Bramha Kumar at the Munhumutapa Offices in Harare.Zimbabwe and India have shared a strong bond since the Middle Ages, with a history of cooperation that spans centuries. This partnership has been strengthened over the years through various developmental initiatives.Zimbabwe is grateful for India’s developmental assistance, technical cooperation, and investments in various sectors. India’s support has been instrumental in Zimbabwe’s growth and development.Despite cordial political relations and increased bilateral cooperation, current trade levels between Zimbabwe and India remain low. Both nations recognize the need to enhance trade ties and are exploring ways to achieve this goal.Zimbabwe seeks to tap into India’s expertise in pharmaceutical manufacturing, while India’s healthcare sector is renowned for its quality and affordability. Zimbabwe’s rich mineral resources also offer opportunities for Indian investment. Additionally, India’s experience in promoting small to medium enterprises can benefit Zimbabwe.An Indian business delegation recently visited Zimbabwe, expressing interest in starting operations in the country. Ambassador Kumar cited Zimbabwe’s peaceful environment as a significant draw for Indian investors.Zimbabwe and India share a common thread beyond economic cooperation. Both nations have worked together to promote global south and South-South cooperation, supporting each other on bilateral and multilateral forums.Efforts are underway to establish a robust framework and institutional mechanism to support trade between Zimbabwe and India. This will facilitate cooperation, motivate businesses, and unlock the full potential of their trade relationship.As Zimbabwe and India strengthen their trade ties, the future looks promising. With a renewed focus on cooperation and mutual support, the two nations are poised for significant economic growth and development.
