In a groundbreaking effort to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and promote mental health, Fathers Against Abuse (FAA) recently convened two Stakeholders Inception Meeting to introduce their innovative project. The initiative, set to be implemented in Epworth and Caledonia, seeks to improve access to mental health services for men, thereby reducing GBV and substance abuse in these communities.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from various organizations, including government departments, community leaders, and civil society groups. Participants introduced themselves and shared their work in Epworth and Caledonia, highlighting the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the pervasive issue of GBV.

FAA Programme Officer Mr. Joy Mushamba presented the project’s background and context, emphasizing the critical role of mental health in preventing GBV. The organization’s project objectives, target group, and implementation methodology were also discussed, outlining the comprehensive approach to engaging men in the prevention of GBV.

Stakeholders actively engaged in discussions around opportunities for collaboration, recognizing the importance of a unified approach to address the complex issues surrounding GBV. Roles, responsibilities, communication, and feedback mechanisms were established to ensure effective project implementation.

FAA emphasized the importance of access to mental health services for men, stating, “When men receive the support they need, they can better manage stress and emotions, which helps break the cycle of harmful behaviors.” The organization also highlighted the significance of promoting positive masculinities, encouraging men to adopt healthy, respectful, and non-violent behaviors.

The project’s collaborative approach was evident in FAA’s commitment to working with organizations that program around GBV, mental health, and substance misuse. By uniting with like-minded organizations, FAA aims to create a comprehensive network of support services for men and communities affected by GBV.

Furthermore, the project’s focus on Epworth and Caledonia, two communities that have been disproportionately affected by GBV, demonstrates FAA’s dedication to addressing the needs of marginalized populations. By working closely with local leaders and organizations, FAA ensures that their interventions are tailored to the specific needs of these communities.

As the project moves forward, the Epworth and Caledonia communities can expect a multifaceted approach to addressing GBV, one that prioritizes mental health, community engagement, and collaboration. With stakeholders united in their efforts, a safer, more equitable society for all is within reach.

The success of this project has the potential to serve as a model for future initiatives, demonstrating the power of collaboration and community-driven solutions in the fight against GBV. As FAA and their partners work towards creating a brighter future for Epworth and Caledonia, their efforts serve as a beacon of hope for communities around the world.
