Editorial Comment By Ilyana SitholeThe revival of the Pediatric Heart Surgery Program for Zimbabwe defines a moment in our healthcare landscape. Rekindled after a discouraging five-year hiatus, this initiative has given renewed hope to families with children born of congenital heart conditions. With today being the last day of the medical camp at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, full recognition is due to the invaluable community impact of this program and to the gravity with which sustainability imperatives beckon. It is this partnership between Gift of Life International, the local surgeons, the Rotary Club of Harare Central, and an experienced team of cardiac specialists from the University of Cairo that underpins the strength that can be leveraged from partnerships in the address of key health challenges. Having ten children under the age of 14 benefit from these life-saving surgeries in just 5 days reflects on what is achievable when organizations come together with a shared mission. This program is invaluable to families of such young patients. Being continuously bothered by seeing a child suffering from a congenital heart condition is very depressive, apart from the frustration that there is little treatment available. The return of pediatric heart surgeries is more than just a medical intervention; this is a source that can turn lives around.Consider the joy and relief that come to parents who have long awaited this moment, knowing their child now has a fighting chance toward a healthier future. These surgeries are not just a hope but a pathway toward a better quality of life for these children and their families.Of course, this is a big leap forward; yet one must realize that so much more is still to be done. For the sustainability of this program, it requires a multi-dimensional approach in the form of;* Infrastructure Development: state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to provide patient care,* Capacity Building: entailing training and retaining skilled healthcare professionals, especially pediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, * Sustainable Funding: Long-term commitment of funds for program operations and research and* Advocacy: To raise awareness regarding the priority of pediatric heart health and, when possible, influence policy for its support. As we celebrate this milestone, it becomes important to interrogate the events that led to a five-year hiatus of the program. This hiatus of pediatric heart surgeries reflects adversely on the dependability and stability of specialized health care in Zimbabwe. The question that we must ask ourselves is: what assurance do we have that this kind of hiatus will not recur? This is a time for reflection and action. Collaboration with international experts is laudable, but this should be a kick-start to building local capacity. Zimbabwe needs to invest in the training and resources of healthcare professionals in the country to take on the cases independently and with effectiveness. The government should, therefore, play a very vital role in this programme and the general health system. It has to increase funding, improve the health infrastructure, and commit itself to continuous training of the medical personnel for the sustainability of pediatric heart care in Zimbabwe.Community involvement is also imperative. As a citizen, we should rally behind comprehensive health reform initiatives and put the needs of our children to the top of the list, regardless of their economic status. This rebirth is not just the surgeries undertaken in these few days but forging a system that would work throughout so that no child is ever left to fend for themselves without due care. If ten children can be helped in five days, what of in a month, a year? This resumption of pediatric cardiac surgeries in Zimbabwe is indeed a milestone development, but all the same, a beginning. As we celebrate the end of this medical camp, let us also remember what is left behind for us to do. We have to commit ourselves to building a health system resilient enough to provide needed continuous support for children with heart conditions, so as not to leave anyone behind.Let this be a moment of hope that galvanizes us into advocacy for a future wherein every child gets the specialized care they deserve. We can only ensure this revival in pediatric heart care for the children of Zimbabwe becomes a lasting legacy, giving them a window of survival.
