In a recent statement, Dr. Tafadzwa Musarara, chairperson of the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ), highlighted the impressive performance of the grain milling industry this festive season. He reported that the industry has successfully supplied the local market with a variety of grain processed products, including maize meal, rice flour, and salt.

Dr. Musarara stated that, “Despite the high demand characteristic of this time of year, our supplies are exceeding demand by more than 38.9 percent.” He added that, “This surplus has resulted in stable prices and ensured product availability across all retail outlets, both formal and informal”, as he emphasized that this positive outcome translates to convenience and affordability for consumers with this situation beneficial to the public.

Despite the successes of the current season, Dr. Musarara acknowledged the challenges faced in 2024, particularly due to drought conditions that have necessitated the importation of grain. “This year has been a tough one for us, requiring our industry to adapt and seek alternative sources,” he remarked. He pledged the industry’s continued commitment to adequately supply the local market and support local agriculture through counter-farming initiatives.

Looking ahead, the GMAZ is committed to continuing its support for local agriculture and enhancing food security in the country. “We are actively exploring new source markets for maize to ensure that prices remain affordable for consumers,” Dr Musarara added.

He expressed gratitude towards the government’s initiatives to adopt a private sector-led approach in achieving national food security. “This resonates with international best practices,” he said, highlighting the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors in overcoming agricultural challenges.

As the festive season progresses, the GMAZ’s efforts ensure that consumers can enjoy stable prices and a variety of essential grain products, even amidst the ongoing climatic challenges. The commitment to strengthening local agriculture and food security remains a top priority for the industry, promising a resilient future for Zimbabwe’s grain milling sector. Dr Musarara’s statement provides reassurance to the public regarding the availability and affordability of essential grain products during the festive season and beyond.
