Today, October 30, 2024, the Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Dr. T. A. Mavetera, delivered a powerful speech at the inaugural Smart Zimbabwe Conference and Expo held at the Andy Millar Hall in Harare. The conference theme, “Zimbabwe’s Smart Future: Harnessing Innovation for Economic Growth,” set the stage for discussions on Information and Communication Technology’s (ICT) pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s development.

Dr. Mavetera began by acknowledging key figures, including Dr. Beaulah Chirume, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT, and CEOs Rufaro Nyadembera of Zimshop and Justin Bgoni of the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. She expressed gratitude to President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa for his visionary leadership guiding Zimbabwe toward digital transformation.

Dr. Mavetera emphasized ICT’s significance, stating, “ICT is not merely a tool; it’s the driving force underpinning every aspect of our development as a modern, competitive, and connected nation.” She highlighted leveraging digital technologies beyond entertainment to enhance critical sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.

The Minister outlined the Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Master Plan, launched by President Mnangagwa, aiming for a smart nation by 2030. This includes utilizing IoT sensors for efficient urban management, real-time traffic data for safer travel, precision farming tools for food security, advanced technologies for productivity and safety in mining, telemedicine and electronic health records for healthcare, and e-learning platforms for quality education.

Dr. Mavetera stressed connectivity’s importance, affirming the government’s commitment to quality and affordable internet. She mentioned authorizing low Earth orbit satellite technology to complement existing infrastructure and urged public and private sectors to ensure smart device affordability and promote digital literacy.

The Minister underscored integrating ICT into governance, stating e-governance initiatives enhance public service delivery and transparency. She announced the completion of the AI Policy Framework and upcoming National Cyber Security Policy, providing essential guidelines for ICT usage.

Dr. Mavetera concluded that building a Smart Zimbabwe requires collective responsibility. “A single bracelet does not jingle,” she quoted, emphasizing sector collaboration. The Smart Zimbabwe Conference and Expo fosters connections and drives innovation.

Zimbabwe stands on the brink of a digital revolution, with Dr. Mavetera’s address resonating optimism and determination. With ICT at its core, Zimbabwe is poised to become an innovation beacon and a nation every citizen can proudly call home. Her call to action encourages stakeholders to join this transformative journey toward a smarter, connected future.
