By Cimba Shepherd Nhamo A brazen armed robbery at Fawcett Security Company in Chipinge has left investigators stunned, with preliminary findings suggesting that a mole within the company fed crucial information to the five suspects who carried out the daring heist.The robbery, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, saw the suspects make off with a staggering US$114,411 and R1,281,320. According to National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, intelligence gathered from the scene points to an insider who supplied the robbers with detailed information about Fawcett’s operations.“The evidence suggests that the suspects had inside help,” Commissioner Nyathi said. “We are working to identify the mole and bring them to justice.”The robbery unfolded when two Fawcett security officers, George Nhamo Sithole and Dzime Sithole, were ambushed by two masked men while on patrol. The suspects, who were armed with pistols, forced the officers to surrender their uniforms and vehicle keys before tying them up and locking them in the cash compartment.The gang then proceeded to the Fawcett Security Company premises, where they overpowered additional security guards and gained access to the vault. They made off with the cash, leaving behind a trail of destruction and abandoned tools.Commissioner Nyathi vowed that police would leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of the culprits, including the suspected mole within Fawcett. “We will work tirelessly to ensure that all those involved in this heinous crime are brought to book,” he said.The investigation is ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to come forward. “We appeal to members of the public who may have information about the robbery or the suspects to contact us,” Commissioner Nyathi said.In the meantime, Fawcett Security Company has launched an internal investigation into the incident. “We are cooperating fully with the police and conducting our own investigation to determine how this happened,” said a company spokesperson.The robbery has raised concerns about the security of cash-in-transit operations in Zimbabwe. “This incident highlights the need for increased security measures to protect against such crimes,” said a security expert.As the investigation continues, police are working to determine the extent of the mole’s involvement and whether any other insiders were involved. The case has sent shockwaves through the security industry, with many calling for increased vigilance and cooperation between companies and law enforcement agencies.
