A 35 year old man from Mutoko has been sentenced by the Mutoko Magistrates Court to 30 years in prison for repeatedly raping his two daughters aged 7 and 5 on several occasions between December 2023 and March 2024.

The court heard that the accused had been sexually assaulting his daughters, aged 7 and 5, on multiple occasions. It is reported that the accused took advantage of the late hours and early mornings to commit these acts before the girls went to school. Following a divorce from their mother he allegedly threatened the children warning them not to speak out about the abuse.

The matter came to light after a local councillor received an anonymous tip-off. Concerned for the girls safety the councillor questioned them leading to their courageous disclosure of the abuse, the councillor learned the horrifying truth and alerted the authorities, leading to the man’s arrest.

The accused was found guilty on both counts of rape and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on each count. The sentences will run consecutively, resulting in an effective 30-year prison term.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that sexual abuse can have on children and their families. It is crucial to have open conversations about sexual abuse and to provide children with the support and resources they need to come forward and seek help.
