Zimbabwe is preparing to host a month celebration of the country’s abundant and diverse culture this May, as Zimbabwe celebrates the 2025 National Culture Month. The May 1st – May 31st celebration will be an emphatic celebration of the indigenous culture, creativity, and intellectual debates in response to the inspirational theme: “Celebrating Indigenous Voices.”

The organized month-long program includes specific weekly focus points to study all the different parts of Zimbabwean culture. Week one will challenge a rediscovery of ancient eating habits of past ancestors by making a call to bring back ancient recipes and ways of cooking as a way to connect modern-day generations with food heritage.

The following week will showcase the country’s special fashion history in the Indigenous Fashion Week. The story is set to accentuate the richness and metaphorical significance of traditional dress within various communities and give room for designers and artisans to display their work influenced by their heritage.

Linguistic diversity during the Indigenous Languages and Cultural Dialogue week will be devoted to mid-month. It will use music, dance, visual arts, film, literary arts, and workshops to commemorate and popularize the many indigenous languages used throughout Zimbabwe for the sake of furthering inter-cultural appreciation through the above means.

The culmination of the month-long celebration will be the fourth week, dedicated to the National Culture Month Launch at Chief Tshovani homestead in Masvingo Province. The significant event will be attended by His Excellency the President, Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, on a date yet to be announced, highlighting the government’s commitment to cultural preservation and promotion.

In a bid to encourage nationwide participation, all the provinces of Zimbabwe will all be holding their launch events simultaneously. The Provincial events will be organized by the Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in an effort to bring local participation and that the cultural celebration spirit reaches every corner of the nation. Local communities are also invited to come up with their own events in an effort to celebrate their own respective indigenous languages and forms of culture throughout the period.

This National Culture Month aligns with Zimbabwe’s commitment to regional and international frameworks that champion cultural diversity and national unity. Furthermore, the initiative is intended to provide a stimulus for the growth and development of Zimbabwe’s creative and cultural sectors, recognizing their vital contribution to the nation’s identity and economy. The month-long celebration promises a comprehensive exploration and affirmation of Zimbabwe’s rich and varied cultural landscape.
