Social media posts claiming that locals broke into Strathmore Farm in Banket and stole potatoes have been refuted by the Zimbabwe Republic Police. The incident has been explained in a press statement issued today, October 1, 2024.

Two weeks before to the purported event, the farm, which is leased to Jonathan Timothy Mackwade for potato farming and owned by retired High Court Judge Vernanda Cecil Ziyambi, had finished harvesting, according to the police’s preliminary inquiry. This disregards the viral video’s assertions.

Additional research revealed that on September 24, 2024, the farm manager had given residents and employees permission to remove damaged potatoes from the harvested field. This clarifies the reason of the people’s presence in the field, which was mistaken for theft.

Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged the public to avoid spreading falsehoods regarding the incident. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores the public to verify information before sharing it on social media platforms,” Nyathi said.

The police’s clarification serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information before sharing it, so as to prevent the spread of misinformation and maintaining peace and order.
