By Staff Reporter The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to motorists and vehicle owners, stating that vehicles found on the roads without proper registration plates will be impounded. The ZRP is enforcing the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act Chapter 13:14, aiming to curb the growing number of unregistered vehicles and related criminal activities.According to a press statement released by Commissioner P. Nyathi, the ZRP is taking decisive action to ensure compliance with the law. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police reminds the public that any vehicle moving on the country’s roads without displaying number plates as required under the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act Chapter 13: 14, will be impounded for the law to take its course,” the statement read. The police emphasized that this directive applies to all vehicles, regardless of ownership, including family, public, company, government, and privately owned vehicles. Impounded vehicles will only be released after the necessary registration process is completed with the relevant authorities. In addition to unregistered vehicles, the ZRP has raised concerns about the increasing number of vehicles being sold without prompt ownership transfers. Investigations have revealed a disturbing trend where vehicles are sold multiple times, yet remain registered under the original owner’s name.“For instance, Police investigations have revealed a disturbing trend where a vehicle is sold to nearly five or seven people and continue to be registered in the first owner’s name. Most of the anomalies are discovered when a vehicle is involved in an incident warranting Police action,” Commissioner Nyathi stated. The ZRP stressed that the law mandates ownership transfer within two weeks of a vehicle sale. Failure to comply will result in consequences for all parties involved. “The law is clear, all such vehicles will be followed up and action taken against the persons involved at every stage of the process,” the statement continued.Vehicle owners, sellers, and buyers have been warned that they will be held accountable for any criminal activities committed by suspects using vehicles that do not comply with the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act. The ZRP urges the public to cooperate in maintaining law and order by ensuring all vehicles are properly registered and ownership transfers are completed promptly.
