By Ilyana SitholeThe green fields of Zimbabwe have the unprecedented potential for economic growth, one that can be harnessed only by powerful agricultural research and development. In a nation where agriculture continues to be an anchor for survival and economic livelihood, the upcoming Research and Extension Symposium from May 28-30, 2025, marks a watershed towards realizing this potential.Themed “Transformative Agricultural Technologies Facilitating the Achievement of Vision 2030,” the symposium, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, and its partners the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS), presents the inner importance innovation takes in facilitating agriculture to move forward. The need for such a conference cannot be overemphasized. While, in Zimbabwe, there is a system of research institutions producing applicable technology and information, the gap between research and application is a very critical area of lack. The symposium is attempting to bridge this gap by providing a platform where extension services, researchers, and farmers interact. The objectives of the symposium are clear and functional: to share the latest technologies, define the interface between research and extension, generate feedback on adoption of technology, and define priorities for research based on consultation with stakeholders. They are in a good alignment with the vision of the country for achieving Vision 2030, which requires the basic revolutionizing of agricultural productivity and sustainability. The thematic headings identified for the symposium capture the range and nature of the challenges and opportunities faced by agriculture in the contemporary era. From crop improvement and fertilizer nutrition to animal disease and climatic forecasting, the agenda will include a wide range of significant topics. Particularly noteworthy is the presence, alongside more conventional research and extension themes, of “Extension Methodologies/Feedback Mechanisms” and “Research, Extension and Education Policy Environment,” in recognition of the absolutely critical roles of effective communication and policy-facilitating mechanisms to the success of research outcomes.ARC demo plot technology competition on day three of the symposium is an utmost demanding aspect. To view new practices will certainly motivate extension officers and farmers.One-day information exchange is just the starting point for the symposium. It will end up being employed as a forum for:* Increased Cooperation: By bringing together a broad array of stakeholders, the symposium will foster a culture of cooperation that will be necessary to develop and implement effective agricultural solutions. * Focused Research: Farmer and extension service inputs will be utilized to inform future research agendas so that funds are spent solving actual problems.* Capacity Building: The symposium would provide the forum for the junior researchers to expose their work and acquire some ideas from the veteran researchers and assist in creating a robust agriculture human resource base. * Knowledge Transfer: The hard copy of the symposium proceedings will be an easily accessible publication for value chain members since research findings are available at hand. The 400 seating capacity of the researchers, extension workers, farmers, and the policy-makers speaks volumes about the importance being given to this event. Having distinguished guest lecturers from academia and the global research community will also complement the debate and provide inputs. In conclusion, the seeds of progress are being sown, the Research and Extension Symposium stands as a vital investment in Zimbabwe’s agricultural future. By enhancing collaboration, promoting innovation, and strengthening the research-extension linkage, this event will contribute significantly to driving economic growth and achieving the nation’s development goals. With the continued commitment to agricultural research and development, Zimbabwe’s fields will yield a bountiful harvest.
