Chegutu West legislator Hon. Shacky Timburwa has passionately highlighted the devastating effects of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.

“Today, I choose to shed light on why sanctions are causing immense harm to us as Zimbabweans,” Hon. Shacky Timburwa emphasized in a statement posted on his WhatsApp channel and Facebook page. “Despite the narratives put forward by certain foreign entities, these sanctions have far-reaching consequences that deeply affect our everyday lives.”

Zimbabwe’s land reform program aimed at correcting colonial-era imbalances sparked the imposition of sanctions. These measures crippled the nation’s economy, posing significant financial burdens and hindering international transactions.

As a lawmaker and successful entrepreneur, Hon. Timburwa’s statement carries significant weight. His well-informed perspective sheds light on the economic and social implications of sanctions.

Hon. Timburwa stresses that sanctions have far-reaching consequences that deeply affect everyday lives. “While many may not grasp the full extent of the damage they cause, it is important to explain how these sanctions are stifling our progress and economic potential,” he noted.

“These sanctions impose significant financial burdens on our economy,” Hon. Timburwa explained. “A typical Zimbabwean faces immense difficulties in conducting international financial transactions due to the lack of correspondent banking relationships.”

The entire nation is affected as Zimbabwe is systematically excluded from the global financial system. International banks, fearing hefty regulatory fines and compliance penalties, avoid maintaining relationships with Zimbabwean financial institutions. This disconnection leads to severe liquidity shortages, inhibits trade, and stifles economic growth.

“Critics may argue that other nations, such as Russia or Iran, have managed to survive, or even thrive, under sanctions,” Hon. Timburwa acknowledged. “However, these countries possess vast resources like oil and gas and diversified global trade partnerships, which enable them to cushion the impact of sanctions.”

Russia has established alternative banking systems like MIR and maintained strong trading relationships with major economies like China and India. In contrast, nations like Cuba, Venezuela, and North Korea have experienced economic collapse under similar conditions.

Venezuela, heavily reliant on oil exports, has been crippled by sanctions, leading to hyperinflation, widespread shortages, and a shrinking economy. Cuba, under decades of sanctions, has struggled with slow growth and dependence on external aid. North Korea’s isolation due to sanctions on nuclear activities has resulted in chronic economic stagnation.

“The key difference between nations that withstand sanctions and those that collapse lies in economic diversification and ability to maintain international trade through alternative mechanisms,” Hon. Timburwa emphasized. “Zimbabwe, with its reliance on foreign trade and financial markets, faces a scenario more comparable to Venezuela or Cuba.”

Isolation exacerbates liquidity issues, hinders investment, and limits growth – all stemming directly from sanctions. Hon. Timburwa stresses that while some nations navigate sanctions successfully, Zimbabwe’s lack of resources and financial systems has left it economically constrained, causing immense harm to every Zimbabwean.

“These sanctions are not just ‘targeted’ – they are bleeding our nation dry,” Hon. Timburwa concluded.

Hon. Timburwa urges the international community to reconsider sanctions and work towards inclusive solutions. This enables Zimbabwe to unlock economic potential, restore hope, and foster regional stability.

As Zimbabwe marks October 25th as a day of protest against sanctions, Timburwa’s statement resonates with urgency. His words inspire collective action, fueling hope for a brighter future.

The people of Zimbabwe continue to bear the brunt of these sanctions. Timburwa’s call to action reverberates across the nation, igniting determination and resilience.

With every voice raised against sanctions, Zimbabwe moves closer to economic freedom. Hon. Shacky Timburwa’s unwavering commitment inspires a nation, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.

Through his bold statement, Timburwa has ignited a beacon of hope. His words echo the aspirations of Zimbabweans, united in their quest for economic liberation.
