Basera police are investigating the gruesome case of murder-suicide that happened at Utete Village, Chitsa, Gutu in Masvingo.

Raramai Dhewa, 40, was found dead in the kitchen hut at her home with severe injuries, while a blood-stained log was found next to her on January 2, 2025, showing that it had been used in the tragic incident.

Her 46-year-old husband, Fungai Chitsale, was found hanging from a roof truss in their two-bedroom house after Raramai’s body was discovered. The circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident are not clear, and police are still trying hard to piece together the events leading to this unfortunate outcome.

In another but no less disturbing incident, police in Filabusi appeal for information in relation to a murder that occurred on 3 January 2025 at Village 16 B, Nkankezi. A manhunt has been launched for six suspects in connection with the murder of Talent Hlongwane (29). The six suspects—Zenzo Moyo (32); Ayanda Moyo (30); Nqobizita Moyo (34); Senly Moyo (29); Paul Ndlovu (36); and Donald Sibanda (30)—are accused of attacking Hlongwane with spears, axes, and machetes after allegedly accusing him of being a bully.

The police have called on those with information about the suspects or incidents to report to the nearest police station, emphasizing community cooperation as the only way to bring these crimes to justice

A Moment of Reflection: Violence and Hopelessness
These are tragic events that bring about deep questions concerning the nature of violence and the desperation that would drive people to such drastic measures. Why do people kill, and what then drives a person to take his or her life after such an act? Most of the time, the messiness of human emotions and relationships leads to tragic ends, and the communities are left to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of such violence.

Understanding the Triggers
1. Domestic Violence: The nature of Raramai’s injuries suggests that some sort of violent confrontation must have occurred, likely due to a background issue like domestic abuse. Victims of domestic violence often undergo a cycle of trauma, which might lead to a feeling of hopelessness and despair.

2. Mental Health Issues: It is an important aspect of understanding suicide because those who suffer from depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders may see suicide as the only way to free themselves from suffering. The stigma attached to mental health in many communities prevents people from seeking help.

3. Relationship Strain: The dynamics of a troubled relationship may cause extreme emotional distress. In the case of domestic disputes, for example, the emotional torment can rapidly escalate to tragic ends.

4. Societal Pressures: Economic hardships, social isolation, and community expectations can be a heavy burden on some people’s shoulders. In Zimbabwe, where many grapple with significant socio-economic challenges, these pressures may heighten personal crises.

5. Lack of support systems: Inaccessibility to mental health resources and lack of support systems make people feel isolated and helpless. Societies that do not encourage mental health awareness may further the stigma that prevents people from seeking help.

As investigations go on, society needs to introspect on these problems and look for ways to solve the inherent problems that lead to such tragedies.
