Commissioner P. Nyathi of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), yesterday, released disturbing figures regarding road traffic accidents during the festive season, which extended from December 15th to December 26th, 2024. The data reveal an unfavorable similarity with the corresponding time frame from last year.

In the reviewed period, ZRP documented a total of 1,211 road traffic accidents, a decrease from the 1,454 accidents reported in 2023. Nevertheless, the death toll has risen—with 77 individuals dead in 2024 compared to 71 in 2023. The injury count stays relatively consistent, with 401 individuals hurt this year and 393 the previous year.

Consequently, the police have stated that fatigue and reckless driving are the primary contributors for these accidents. The majority of deadly accidents included private vehicles, with just one severe incident involving public service vehicles. On December 22nd, three buses crashed, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.

Additional statistics from individual dates show a disturbing trend, thus:
– On 22nd December, there were 106 accidents, which resulted in seven deaths and 38 injuries.
– Christmas Day, 25th December, witnessed 104 accidents claiming 13 dead and leaving 16 injured.
– The next day, 26th December, reported 87 accidents claiming 11 deaths and 40 injuries.

The police also mentioned several incidents involving pedestrians and urged drivers to exercise greater care, particularly in residential zones and places with heavy foot traffic.

The ZRP has reiterated its dedication to upholding the enforcement of road safety regulations. Drivers are cautioned against excessive speed, reckless overtaking, and carrying too much load. Hence, it is a plea to the public to notify the nearest police station regarding such irresponsible driving activities or contact the National Complaints Desk at 0242 703631 or via WhatsApp at 0712 800 197.

In a different press statement today, the ZRP provided the following contact numbers for reporting criminal activities and traffic incidents with the festive season reaching its peak.
