The nation holds its breath as Bright Zhantali, accused of multiple heinous murders, faces justice. However, the trial has been delayed until November 8, pending the results of a psychiatric evaluation.

Zhantali, currently detained at the Chikurubi Maximum Prison Psychiatric Unit, stands accused of brutally murdering three women: Priscilla Chidhakwa, Manyara Chisora, and Spiwe Nyamoto. The alleged crimes, committed between 2020 and 2021, have left families shattered and a community reeling.

Prosecutors allege Zhantali lured victims into vulnerable situations. In July 2020, he offered Chidhakwa $10 for sexual services, only to rape and kill her at Donnybrook Race Course. Her lifeless body was discovered the next day, abandoned in a trench.

In December 2021, Zhantali showed Chisora a property for rent, then raped and murdered her with an axe. He callously stole valuables from her home, leaving behind a scene of unspeakable horror.

Nyamoto’s tragic fate was sealed when Zhantali hired her for overnight services, only to rape and kill her. Her body was heartlessly discarded in Mabvuku sewage ponds.

Zhantali has confessed to 10 additional murders in Marondera. His first trial was halted in November 2022 due to bizarre behavior, prompting Justice Roger Manyangadze to order his psychiatric evaluation.

Magistrate Dennis Mangosi has deferred the indictment until the evaluation results are available. As the nation awaits the trial’s outcome, the families of Zhantali’s victims seek closure and justice.

The delay raises questions about mental health and criminal responsibility. Will Zhantali’s evaluation provide insight into his actions, or will it further complicate the pursuit of justice?

As Zimbabwe grapples with the enormity of Zhantali’s alleged crimes, one thing is clear: the road to justice will be long and arduous. The nation holds its breath, awaiting the verdict.
