The recent arrest of Memory Moyana (20) for the murder of a young child is a horrifying testament to the depths of human cruelty. A video circulating on social media captured the brutal assault of a naked minor, a crime so heinous it leaves us reeling. Yet, the details that come out paint an even more disturbing picture.

The victim was subjected to unimaginable violence at the hands of her stepmother, whom she had been entrusted to. The very act is beyond comprehension. How can someone trusted with a child’s well-being become that child’s tormentor? Talk of evil spirits is but a thinly veiled effort to hide an act of sheer monstrosity.

But what makes this even more perverted is the alleged involvement of the child’s father, Talent Muchato (26). Instead of saving his daughter, he was reportedly part of covering up the crime. Fear or what sick complicity might have led him down that dark path?

The reason for this savagery still eludes definition. Ritual or just pure unbridled malice? Whatever the motivation, it can never justify taking an innocent life.

The child could have been returned to her biological mother if they didn’t want to live with her. There is just no excuse for such barbarity.

The abolition of the death penalty is a complicated matter, but it’s inapplicable here. Justice just demands a punishment that fits the crime in severity.

Those who commit such heinous acts should be held to the fullest extent of the law. They must come to understand what their actions mean to the family left behind and indeed, to society at large.

To live with the knowledge of such an act is a burden that should be unbearable. But the news is filled with stories of those who manage to exist with such darkness in their hearts.

This case is a striking reminder that we must be always vigilant in protecting our children. It compels us to speak out when we see or suspect abuse. And it’s a reminder that, with some people, evil can reside.

The arrest of Memory Moyana is a step toward justice, although nothing can ever be done to bring back the life that was lost. Let this be a wake-up call to all of us to put our heads together to ensure that our children are safe to prevent such tragedies.
