A 38-year-old Siamukombe village man (name withheld) appeared at the Karoi Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempting murder. The offender received a 34-month jail term with 4 months suspended for 5 years.

On 23rd November 2024, at 0600 hours in Siamukombe Village, the complainant (61) and village head, and his son-in-law who is the offender, got into a fight. The offender was planting seeds in a garden, contrary to a directive in the village, when the complainant intervened. There was an altercation, wherein the offender utilized a wooden log in hitting the complainant at the head and elbow. The complainant ran away from the crime scene and reported for treatment at the hospital.

Thereafter, the unnamed suspect was arrested and presented to Karoi Magistrates’ Court. He was found guilty of trying to kill the complainant and sentenced to 34 months imprisonment with four months of it suspended for five years on good behavior. The accused will therefore serve an effective sentence of 30 months imprisonment.

The case brought out the risks of allowing village disputes to be escalated and the need to abide by the set guidelines.
