With the festive holiday upon us, many of us find ourselves in a whirlwind of activity-rushing from shoo to shop, scrolling through endless online catalogs, and stressing over what to buy for those we love. But amidst this hustle and bustle, let’s stop and ask ourselves a deeper question: What would Jesus give at Christmas? Would His gifts include the latest gadgets, trendy outfits, or extravagant luxuries -for example like Wicknell Chivayo, Tzu Chi, World Vision, Shema, Uncle Saint (food for thought)?

The Bible has great insight into Jesus’ heart and values. In the synoptic by Matthew we learn that whatever we do to the least of our brothers, we do to Him, Matthew 25:31-46. This powerful message spotlights themes of compassion, kindness, and generosity to those in need. Challenge all of us to look beyond ourselves and consider how best we can embody the spirit of Christ in our actions, especially during this giving season.

If Jesus were to choose some Christmas presents, it may go something like this:
The Gift of Forgiveness
Imagine Jesus encouraging us to release the pains of our past into the transforming power of forgiveness. He would remind us that grudges weigh us down and keep us from experiencing true joy and peace. When we forgive ourselves and others, we are opening the door to healing and renewal. This Christmas, let’s reflect upon our own lives-who do we need to forgive? What might we be carrying that we can let go of? It’s in the giving of this gift of forgiveness that we set ourselves free, opening up to love and understanding.

The Gift of Kindness
Jesus would stir within us the desire to be oases of kindness in a world that too often seems unkind and fractured. He’d remind us that even the most simple things-just heating up a smile, soothing words, and any simple action-mightily affect one’s day. Kindness begets kindness; when we give it out to people around us, it will surely spark their interest to act in similar fashion. As the festive holiday is upon us, let us make a conscious effort to do acts of kindness: help a neighbor, volunteer at a local charity, or just reach out to a friend in need. We could create a ripple effect in compassion that would reverberate far beyond our immediate circles.

The Gift of Hope
Jesus would give us, as a gift, the hope so valuable amidst a world filled with uncertainties and fears. He would reassure us, “You are not alone; I am in your life to help you throughout life’s difficulties.” And indeed, hope is an uplifting force-it gives light and strength in battling the struggles in life. Let us bring this hope this Christmas to other people. Whether through uplifting conversations, encouraging messages, or just being present for those in need, we can light the way for others and remind them that better days are ahead.

The Gift of Love
Most of all, Jesus would give us the gift of love-the greatest gift of all! He would remind us that love is the bedrock of every meaningful relationship and the foundation of our existence. Love is not a feeling, but an action; an action that draws us to putting others first before our own needs. This season, let us try to love without conditions, embracing families, friends, and even those that may be hard to love. As we give so much love, we reflect upon the heart of Christ Himself, having a warm inviting environment for others so they may see His love.

Reflecting Jesus’s Gifts
As we come together to celebrate this Christmas, let us reflect upon what Jesus would give: striving to reflect His values, sharing forgiveness, kindness, hope, and love into the lives of those around us. This is one of those perfect opportunities we can make lasting memories out of that will live past any physical gift-moments that will nourish our souls and connect us with one another on such a deep level.

Consider creating new traditions that accompany these gifts. You might plan a family volunteer day, be writing letters of forgiveness, or issue a kindness challenge in which you and your loved ones pledge to do acts of kindness throughout the holiday season. As we center these gifts within our celebrations, we honor not only the spirit of Christ but also bring depth to our lives and the lives of those around us.

A Prayer for Christmas

As we come again to this sacred season, may we take time with the heart of it.

Father in heaven, as Your Son’s birthday draws near, inspire me to emulate His example to be generous, kind, and loving. May it be evident in our lifestyle and given, as from His hand, to all in need. Give us the wisdom to give from the heart, embracing the true meaning of this season. Enable us to forgive those who have hurt us, show kindness to those in need, instill hope in the weary, and love unconditionally. May our homes be filled with joy, and may our hearts be open to receiving and sharing Your everlasting love. Amen.

Let us, in this holiday season, again commit ourselves to the practice of giving gifts that really matter-gifts reflective of the heart of Jesus and that change our world.
