BY DR MASIMBA MAVAZA ZANU-PF is currently navigating a tumultuous period, marked by internal power struggles and controversies. The party’s future hangs in the balance, with several factors influencing its trajectory. This is not the first time that internal squabbles have threatened to tear the party apart. The Key Challenges and Dynamics in the party now can be overcomed. The situation on the ground is creating Factional Tensions. There’s a notable rift between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, with disagreements over issues like corruption and the role of influential business people (zvigananda). People are asking how the party can be set against itself by people flashing money? This has raised exciting and unprecedented interest in Zimbabwe’s politics in the international community. The dogs are coming out, and party faithfuls are asking Who let the dogs out? The cause of all this tension is the question of Leadership and Succession. Questions surround President Mnangagwa’s potential term extension beyond 2028, with some party members pushing for a 2030 agenda, sparking debates about succession and leadership. Corruption and Business Influence have added fuel to the already raging power. Controversies involve business figures like Kudakwashe Tagwirei and Wicknell Chivayo, with accusations of using wealth and political connections to influence party dynamics. The streets are abuzz with questions like, Why is Chivayo given public access to presidential phones? Are our national secrets safe in the hands of Chivayo, who publicly boasts that akachibata kuti dzvi? Party Spokesperson’s Perspective is not very clear, and it resembles a water fountain giving hot and cold water. ZANU PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa has criticized Chiwenga’s stance on certain business people, framing it as a distraction from the party’s empowerment initiatives and economic successes. Mutsvangwa emphasizes the party’s democratic processes and upcoming congress in 2027 as pivotal for determining leadership, effectively telling Vice President Chiwenga to wait for the Congress. His words bring back the words of President Mugabe when he told President Mnangagwa to wait for the Congress. This was not to be. Looking at the situation on the round there, the springs Uncertain Outlook. Given these internal conflicts and external pressures, ZANU-PF’s future is uncertain. The party’s ability to navigate these challenges will likely shape its continued relevance and influence in Zimbabwean politics. ZANU-PF is a very strong party, and it has seen many situations more than this. The party thrives better in volatile situations. There are serious Factors to watch 2027 Congress: The party congress could be a critical moment for determining leadership and direction. ZANU-PF must preside over positive Economic Performance to remain relevant. Zimbabwe’s economic challenges and the party’s handling of them will impact public perception and support. The diplomatic acumen of President MNANGAGWA must deal with Internal Cohesion. Managing factional tensions and maintaining party unity will be crucial at this time. We need not be selfish but to be patriotic for the sake of our party and our country. The recent shake-up in Zanu PF’s Politburo, where President Emmerson Mnangagwa reassigned roles, including Jacob Mudenda taking over as Treasurer General from Dr. Obert Mpofu, is explicitly confirmed in available reports. Earlier reports had indicated that Jacob Mudenda moved from Legal Affairs to Treasurer General, replacing Patrick Chinamasa, who shifted to Legal Affairs. But now the cat is out of the bag and screaming. We look at the Key Aspects of the Move. Jacob Mudenda’s Profile is pregnant. Mudenda is a seasoned politician and current Speaker of the National Assembly, with a longstanding association with Zanu PF and historical ties to Robert Mugabe. His Experience and Background make him fit for any office. He is a lawyer with a notable career, involved in politics since Zimbabwe’s independence, and weathered controversies like the Willowgate scandal. The reshuffle has deep Implications in a Volatile Party. Such moves often reflect internal power dynamics and alignments within Zanu PF, potentially signaling shifts in influence or attempts to manage factional tensions. There are serious Considerations to take in this situation. Zanu PF is known for complex internal politics; these changes might reflect efforts to balance power or address succession questions. Leadership and Succession: President Mnangagwa’s decisions on appointments can impact perceptions of his leadership and potential stability within the party. It is meant to achieve the Economic and Political Context. Zimbabwe faces economic challenges, internal party dynamics that can influence governance approaches and policy directions. Key Figures Involved in this bold reassigning of roles are Jacob Mudenda: Experienced politician and current Speaker, with significant roles in Zanu PF. Dr Obert Mpofu formerly held a Politburo role, though specifics of his demotion are not detailed in available reports. Obert Moses Mpofu is a prominent Zimbabwean politician affiliated with ZANU-PF, born on October 12, 1951. He’s had a long and varied career in government, holding several key ministerial positions. His Key Roles and Positions includeMinisterial Portfolios. His Notable Actions and Policies include Price Freeze and People’s Shops: In 2007, Mpofu implemented a price freeze on basic commodities and initiated ‘people’s shops’ aimed at selling products at affordable prices. He engineered the Look-East Policy: He promoted trade between Zimbabwe and China, aligning with the government’s Look-East policy. Dr Mpofu was placed on the United States sanctions list in 2003. His Background and Education are equally impressive Dr Mpofu holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Delhi, an MPS (Master’s in Policy Studies) from the University of Zimbabwe, and a PhD in Policy Studies from Zimbabwe Open University. He’s believed to be one of the earliest ZPRA guerrillas trained for the Zimbabwean Liberation War, crossing into Zambia in 1967. Dr Mpofu’s removal from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s cabinet in September 2018 marked a significant change in his political trajectory. Political Dynamics and Human Rights have blocked the eyes of the international observers. Internal ZANU-PF Tensions are, in a sense, healthy for any political party, and the party always comes out strong. There’s an indication of factional struggles within ZANU-PF, with controversies surrounding figures like Kudakwashe Tagwirei and interactions between President Mnangagwa and Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga are not new happenings and should not cause panic. Efforts are being made to tackle complex corruption cases with new strategies. So corruption will not break the party, and fighting is very hard. Outlook and Challenges of ZANU-PF impact the nation. Zimbabwe faces significant hurdles, including economic difficulties, political tensions, and social challenges. Whether the country will “pull through” depends on various factors, including government policies, international relations, economic management, and addressing internal political dynamics and human rights concerns. We need to come together as a party and shun factionalism. We should unite and make ZANU-PF proud again. ZANU-PF will always survive this situation. Enemies of ZANU PF must smile and forget. Our party will not be destroyed. It might look shaken, but we are strong in our special way. ZANU PF is the People, and the people are ZANU PF. It is now time for you and me to unite. Zimbabwe is the only country we can call ours in the whole world. God bless Zimbabwe.
