By Ilyana Sithole In a recent case highlighting the ongoing issue of domestic violence, a 64-year-old man from Zezani village was convicted at the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court for physically abusing his wifeThe incident occurred when the accused returned home from a memorial service and requested his 58-year-old wife, the complainant, to prepare breakfast. While she was preparing the meal, he left for Zezani Business Center. Upon his return, he confronted her, accusing her of deliberately delaying the breakfast preparation. This confrontation escalated into violence as the accused physically assaulted his wife with a stick, striking her multiple times across her body.The situation escalated when the man struck his wife on the head with a stone, resulting in an open wound and severe swelling. The brutal nature of the assault raises serious concerns about domestic violence.In court, the accused was sentenced to 24 months in prison, with 8 months of the sentence suspended. This means he will serve 16 months effectively behind bars. The case underscores the severity of domestic violence and the legal system’s commitment to addressing such crimes.The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) continues to reiterate its stance against violence in all forms, urging community members to seek peaceful resolutions to disputes. “We encourage the public to desist from violence and to resolve their disputes amicably or seek third-party mediation.” This conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and supporting victims in seeking justice. As awareness grows, it is hoped that more individuals will feel empowered to report such incidents and that communities will work together to foster safe environments for all.
