The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has confirmed the appointment of Romanian tactician Marian “Mario” Marinica as the new head coach of the senior men’s national football team, the Warriors, on a one-year contract.

Marinica, who previously guided Malawi to their best-ever Africa Cup of Nations finish in 2022, was selected ahead of four other shortlisted candidates, including Stuart Baxter, Patrice Neveu, and Luis Gonçalves.

In a statement released on Tuesday, ZIFA described Marinica as a highly experienced and globally exposed coach whose arrival marks the beginning of a “new era” for Zimbabwean football.

A UEFA Pro Licence holder with over 25 years of experience, Marinica has coached across four continents: Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America and worked with top clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, AS Monaco, Internazionale Milano, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur. He has also been involved with the national teams of Paraguay, Mauritius, Malawi, and Liberia.

ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi expressed optimism about the appointment, saying:

“We are delighted to welcome Coach Marinica to Zimbabwe. His wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven record at the international level make him the ideal candidate to lead the Warriors into a new era. This appointment reflects ZIFA’s commitment to building a competitive and sustainable football structure that delivers results both on and off the pitch.”

Marinica earned plaudits for transforming Malawi’s Flames into a disciplined and competitive side and for helping Liberia achieve the highest climb in FIFA Rankings in June 2024.

Speaking after his appointment, the 69-year-old coach said he was honoured to take charge of the Warriors and vowed to instill discipline, structure, and attacking football in the team.

“Zimbabwe has incredible talent, both locally and abroad,” Marinica said.
“My mission is to build a united and competitive Warriors side capable of challenging the best on the continent. With hard work and belief, we can restore pride to Zimbabwean football.”

Marinica’s immediate focus will be on preparing the team for international friendlies against Algeria and Qatar, as well as laying the groundwork for a strong start to the AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign.

“We will prioritise teamwork, tactical awareness, and player development,” he added. “The goal is not just short-term victories, but building a lasting football culture that Zimbabweans can be proud of.”

ZIFA confirmed that Marinica will assume his duties immediately and will also assist in mentoring local coaches as part of the association’s broader technical development programme.
