By Cimba Shepherd Nhamo Zimbabwe is poised to capitalize on the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), a revolutionary trade agreement set to transform the continent’s economic landscape. Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu is spearheading efforts to ensure local industries are competitive and ready for the challenges and opportunities presented by the AfCFTA.The AfCFTA trade protocol enables goods from other African countries to enter Zimbabwe with minimal restrictions, fostering economic integration and boosting intra-African trade. However, this increased competition demands high-quality, competitive products from Zimbabwean businesses.Minister Ndlovu emphasized the need for local industries to boost productivity and competitiveness. His ministry is working to streamline regulations, facilitate access to resources, and foster public-private partnerships.The Zimbabwe Industrial Reconstruction and Growth Plan (ZIRGP) 2024-2025 addresses immediate challenges and lays the groundwork for accelerated industrial development. This transitional framework succeeds the Zimbabwe National Industrial Development Policy (ZNIDP) 2019-2023.Zimbabwe aims to become a prosperous and empowered upper middle-income society by 2030. The AfCFTA presents opportunities to increase employment, boost incomes, enhance economic inclusion, and lift millions out of extreme poverty.The AfCFTA is expected to significantly impact Africa’s economy, boosting income by $450 billion by 2035, increasing intra-African trade by 52%, and creating 30 million jobs. Zimbabwe is well-positioned to capitalize on these opportunities.Permanent Secretary Dr. Thomas Utete Wushe stressed the importance of adapting to the ever-changing economic environment. The ministry’s strategic planning workshop will evaluate progress, assess achievements, and refine the 2025 strategic plan.Zimbabwe’s future looks bright as it embarks on this Afrocentric trade journey.
