Zimbabwe’s Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, has launched a government-led investigation into the recent demolitions of homes in Harare, carried out by the City Council without a court order. This move comes after intense pressure from legislators seeking answers on the rationale behind the demolitions.

Minister Ziyambi clarified that the government was not involved in the demolitions and verified that no court order was issued. Instead, he emphasized that the Harare City Council, controlled by the opposition, was responsible for the demolitions, allowing buildings to be constructed without proper authorization and then demolishing them without due process.

Ziyambi expressed concerns about the council’s actions, questioning why they waited until houses were completed before sending bulldozers to destroy them. He acknowledged that some demolished houses were beautiful structures, highlighting the need for local authorities to balance enforcement with humanity and consideration for human rights.

This investigation aligns with the Second Republic’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens, ensuring that their rights are protected and respected. The government has faced criticism for its handling of the demolitions, with concerns raised about lack of accountability, human rights violations, and disregard for the rule of law.

As Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs since 2018, Ziyambi has a strong background in law, having earned his LLB degree in 2013 and Master of Laws degree in Constitutional and Human Rights law in 2016. His commitment to upholding the Constitution and promoting human rights is crucial in addressing the concerns surrounding the demolitions.

The investigation is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the events and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Minister Ziyambi’s commitment to transparency and accountability is a welcome development in this contentious issue.
